____________
A three-part documentary series that follows winemakers, innkeepers, chefs and drinkers in search of Italy's most misunderstood and unpredictable wine: lambrusco.
It has been called a thousand things: the peasant's wine, the industrial wine, the Italian Coca-Cola, even the humble Champagne of the plains. Yet even today, no one really knows what lies behind all the masks lambrusco has worn.
Across the three episodes, a portrait emerges of a wine that is hard to pin down. The people of Modena love it like a member of the family, while the wine elite ignore it or even mock it. It conquered markets around the world and lost its identity on the road to commercial success. It is trapped in a word that overflows with meanings and can no longer hold them all.
Lambrusco Republic is not a classic documentary, full of thorough explanations and perhaps a few verdicts on the wines, complete with a top-10 ranking. It is a story full of contradictions, gaps and missteps, but also rich in revelations and joy. Just like lambrusco.
____________
THE EPISODES
Episode 1 – Il Lambruscomio
"But this isn't lambrusco": Filippo Marchi hears it more than anything else when he hands someone a glass. From homemade bottle refermentation to the autoclave of the 1950s, from the American boom of the 1970s to the return of a new generation of winemakers: the recent history of a wine we think we know. With Filippo Marchi, Anselmo Chiarli, Antonio Giacobazzi and Antonio Previdi.
Episode 2 – The Grace of the Hills
Working the hills wears you out. Low yields, endless ups and downs, and a grape, grasparossa, that tests even the most seasoned cellar master. The old road of big volumes leads nowhere anymore, and the new one is still waiting to be mapped out.
With Vittorio Graziano, Anselmo Chiarli, Fabio and Fausto Altariva.
Episode 3 – The Vertigo of the Bassa
On the plain, genetics has joined two grapes at opposite ends of the spectrum: sorbara, the fragile king of the lambruscos, and salamino, the great working-class domestique. Family stories going back a hundred years, and young people who experiment. In the glass, the foam lifts the heart and reveals something missing: what do we really know about these wines? With Filippo Marchi, Antonio Previdi, Gianluca Bergianti, Luciano Saetti, Christian Bellei, Alberto Paltrinieri and Vincenzo Venturelli.
